Mount Ara is located in the Kotayk region between the Hrazdan and Kasakh rivers. Its elevation is 2,614 meters. According to legend, the mountain received its name in honor of the Armenian king Ara the Beautiful, who fought against the Assyrian queen Shamiram and was killed in battle on the slopes of Mount Ara. On the southern slope of the mountain is the cave monastery Tsaghkevank.
