Mount Hatis (2,528 m) is one of the most beautiful and legendary mountains in the surroundings of Yerevan. It is located 2.5 km southeast of the village of Kaputan in Kotayk Province. Mount Hatis is an extinct volcano with a distinct conical shape, gentle slopes cut by deep gorges and rocky outcrops. A wide volcanic crater crowns the summit, making the mountain an excellent destination for hiking.
From the top, breathtaking panoramic views open toward Mount Aragats, Mount Ararat, the Ararat Valley, and nearby villages. The Karsunakh springs originate at the mountain’s southern foot, adding to the natural character of the area.
Mount Hatis is rich in legends and symbolism. It is also known by the names Hadis and Shamiram. The name Hadis is associated with Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, and symbolically echoes the image of the dying and resurrecting god Ara. The name Shamiram reflects the mountain’s position opposite Mount Ara and refers to the famous Armenian legend of Ara the Beautiful and Queen Shamiram, giving Mount Hatis a special place not only in nature, but also in Armenian mythology.
